International Waterbird Census (IWC) 2016

Since 2011, The International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Serbia is coordinated by Bird Study and Protection Society of Serbia. The IWC is coordinated by Wetlands International and it is organized every year in most countries of the world. In 2016 the period of observations was between 10th and 30th of January and the results of waterbird counting had to be provided the IWC until 15th of February.

Ornithologists from Ornithological work group of Arcus Ecological Association participate in national survey since 2012. On 19th of January 2016 the whole area of the Zobnatica lake was observed, as well as the Krivaja creek completely to Đurđin.

In our observation area the most important waterbird species were the following: Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) 393, Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) 312, Common Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) 43, Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) 11, Eurasian Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus) 11, Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) 5, Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) 3, Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) 3, Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) 2, Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) 1, Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) 1, Common Goldeneye (Bucephala clangula) 1, Western Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) 1, Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus) 1, Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) 1 and Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) 1. Totally 790 birds belonging to 16 species were observed.
