Since 2011, The International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Serbia is coordinated by Bird Study and Protection Society of Serbia<\/a><\/em>. The IWC is coordinated by Wetlands International<\/em><\/a> and it is organized every year in most countries of the world. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>In 2026 the period of observations was between 10th<\/sup> and 30th<\/sup> of January and the results of waterbird counting had to be provided the IWC until 10th<\/sup> of February.<\/p>\n

Ornithologists from Ornithological work group of Arcus Ecological Association participate in national survey since 2012. This year, the activities took part from 16th<\/sup> till 21st<\/sup> January. The whole area of the Ba\u010dkotopolsko lake was observed, as well as the Krivaja creek completely to \u0110ur\u0111in. Also, the Krivaja creek was observed from Ba\u010dka Topola to Baj\u0161a and on to Lov\u0107enac (which belongs to Municipality of Mali I\u0111o\u0161) and the whole area of the artificial accumulation lake \u201cKrivaja\u201d.<\/p>\n

In our observation area the most important waterbird species were the following: Mallard<\/strong> (Anas platyrhynchos<\/i>) 758, Common<\/span><\/strong> Reed Bunting<\/strong> (Emberiza schoeniclus<\/i>) 125, Common Crane<\/span><\/strong> (Grus grus<\/i>) 121, White-fronted Goose<\/strong> (Anser albifrons<\/em>) 87, Common<\/span><\/strong> Moorhen<\/strong> (Gallinula chloropus<\/em>) 35, Green-winged Teal<\/b> (Anas crecca<\/i>) 33, Mute Swan<\/strong> (Cygnus olor<\/i>) 19, Grey Heron<\/strong> (Ardea cinerea<\/i>) 16, Smew<\/b> (Mergellus albellus<\/i>) 13,\u00a0Eurasian<\/strong> Wigeon<\/span><\/strong> (Anas penelope<\/i>) 12, Great Egret<\/strong> (Ardea alba<\/em>) 7, Hen Harrier<\/strong> (Circus cyaneus<\/i>) 6, Bearded Reedling<\/span><\/strong> (Panurus biarmicus<\/i>) 5, White-Tailed Eagle<\/strong><\/span><\/b> (Haliaeetus albicilla<\/i>) 3,\u00a0Caspian Yellow-legged Gull<\/b> (Larus cachinnans<\/i>) 3, Goldeneye<\/strong> (Bucephala clangula<\/em>) 2,\u00a0Eurasian<\/strong> Penduline Tit<\/span><\/strong> (Remiz pendulinus<\/i>) 2, Northern Shoveler<\/b> (Anas clypeata<\/i>) 1,\u00a0Marsh Harrier<\/strong> (Circus aeruginosus<\/em>) 1, Black-headed Gull<\/b> (Chroicocephalus ridibundus<\/i>) 1 and\u00a0Great Cormorant<\/span><\/strong><\/span> (Phalacrocorax carbo<\/i>) 1. Totally 1251 birds belonging to 21 species were observed.<\/p>\n
