In the past few years, Arcus Ecological Association from Bačka Topola organized art contest for primary school students on the occasion of the Earth Day. The contest is aimed at promoting the nature protection, the knowledge about the living beings that surround us, about their habitat, ecology and importance. That is why the contest is addressed to young population, especially the primary school students. In the previous years there were a lot of participants from our country, but from abroad as well, and that is how the contest became international. Again, in 2023 we expect participants from all over the Serbia and from abroad, too.
Theme of 2023 contest is European Roller (Coracias garrulus) and its habitat. During the past decades the European Roller population has collapsed throughout Europe and nowadays this species is fighting for its survival. Changes in the European Roller habitat occurred due to human activities. Habitat degradation and loss have had a drastic effect on the European Roller population. At the beginning of 2000s, in the Province of Vojvodina (the North part of Serbia) there were less than twenty nesting pairs of the European Roller. One civil organization in Vojvodina started the European Roller conservation programme aiming conservation of previously collapsed population and potentially growth of the population. The first steps were very successful. Installation of artificial nest-boxes in suitable areas brought increase of the European Roller population in the North of Vojvodina. These encouraging results led to joining the other civil organizations from Vojvodina and taking part in the conservation programme. Thanks to active conservation, the latest results show that now there are more than 400 nesting European Roller pairs in Vojvodina, and the nesting area also grew, so the European Roller started to nest in the parts of Serbia that are southern from the rivers Sava and Danube. The European Roller is bright coloured bird, its head, neck and belly are skyblue, its back is chestnut brown, edge of the wings and the beak are black, the legs are yellow. The European Roller is a lowland species and it prefers open forest steppe habitat. It nests once a year, from May to July, in cavities of solitary and old trees. Rollers mostly hunt for large insects, but sometimes they also feed on small vertebrates. The European Roller is a long distance migrant, it starts its migration in the end of the Summer or beginning of Autumn, spending the winters in the southern and eastern parts of Africa.
