Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Earth Hour engages a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues.
It was famously started as a lights off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. This event saw 2,2 million homes and businesses turn their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change that year. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement. The event is held worldwide and held towards the end of March annually, encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet.
Millions of people around the world switch off their lights for Earth Hour at 8:30 pm (20:30) in their local times on the last Saturday of March each year. Landmarks all around the world turned off their non essential lighting for Earth Hour, including the Sydney Opera House (Sydney, Australia), Empire State Building (New York City, USA), Sears Tower (now Willis Tower, Chicago, USA), Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco, USA), the Colosseum (Rome, Italy), Royal Castle (Stockholm, Sweden), Petronas Towers (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), KL Tower (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Wat Arun Temple (Bangkok, Thailand), The London City Hall (London, England) and the Royal Liver Building (Liverpool, United Kingdom).
The standard Earth Hour „60” logo represents the 60 minutes of Earth Hour where we focus on the impact we are having on our planet and take positive action to address the environmental issues we face. For Earth Hour 2011 „60” logo introduced representing a commitment to add to Earth Hour a positive act for the planet that goes beyond the hour.
