International Waterbird Census (IWC) 2024

Since 2011, The International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Serbia is coordinated by Bird Study and Protection Society of Serbia. The IWC is coordinated by Wetlands International and it is organized every year in most countries of the world. In 2024 the period of observations was between 9th and 31st of January and the results of waterbird counting had to be provided the IWC until 10th of February.

Ornithologists from Ornithological work group of Arcus Ecological Association participate in national survey since 2012. This year, the activities took part from 12nd till 13rd January. The whole area of the Zobnatica lake was observed, as well as the Krivaja creek completely to Đurđin. Later the Krivaja creek was observed from area near Bačka Topola to Bajša.

In our observation area the most important waterbird species were the following: Common Crane (Grus grus) 831, Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) 743, Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) 159, Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) 55, Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) 51, Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) 40, Common Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) 33, Goosander (Mergus merganser) 9, Eurasian Penduline Tit (Remiz pendulinus) 8, Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) 7, Bearded Reedling (Panurus biarmicus) 5, Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope) 3, White-Tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) 2, Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) 1, Great Egret (Casmerodius albus) 1 and Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus) 1. Totally 1949 birds belonging to 16 species were observed.
